About Us

Welcome to the Gwalia Historic Site

The Gwalia Historic Site is a unique heritage destination offering the tourist an opportunity to quietly wander back in time and feel the toughness of life in an outback mining town. Gwalia is not polished in its appearance, rather it is unaffected in its rustic charm. Its remoteness together with this charm, make every visitor to Gwalia Historic Site feel that Gwalia is their own discovery.

Gwalia is a ghost town which has been preserved and maintained by a community that has the deepest of love and respect for its heritage.

Is it a
haunted
Ghost Town?

Come and
see for
yourself!

The Museum is also the site of Historic Hoover House, commissioned and built in 1898 for Herbert Hoover, the 1st Mine Manager of the Sons of Gwalia mine, and later America's 31st President. Hoover House has been restored and part of it is now a beautifully appointed Bed & Breakfast. Walk a mile in his shoes.... or at least spend a night in his house.
